IB TOK - Essay Submission Details 2011-2012

Introduction

You must submit your essay electronically by uploading it to the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) website. Details of how you can do this are set out below. In administrative terms this will make all of our lives easier. You will be the first year to miss the splendour of the TOK submission day. This is a good thing.

Important Notes!

  1. You will be able to upload your essay from 4th January 2012.
  2. It is strongly recommended that you DO NOT upload your essay until you have had feedback on your draft essay.
  3. Each essay needs to be authenticated on-line by your teacher. The essays are then submitted electronically to the IBO.
  4. The essay can be saved as a Word document (.doc or .docx depending on whether you are using Word 2003/earlier or Word 2007/10), a PDF file or a RTF (rich text format) document.
  5. Your deadline for uploading the essay is 5 p.m. on Sunday (yes, SUNDAY), 11th March 2012. This is a real deadline. If you do not meet it, then your essay may not be authenticated in time for final submission.
  6. Your TOK teacher will arrange a time to discuss your final draft either in class or in time-slot outside of your usual session. If you do not attend this meeting or do not produce a draft, then we cannot guarantee to provide you with feedback.

How To Upload Your Essay

  1. You first need two bits of information that you can get from your TOK teacher. They are:
    • Your six-digit alphanumeric user code
    • Your PIN
  2. Next you need your completed essay somewhere to hand ready to upload.
  3. You need to know the EXACT title of the essay and the exact number of words (which must be between 1,200 and 1,600).
  4. You then need to log on to the IB website at https://candidates.ibo.org. (Right-click and open in a new window.)
  5. You will be asked to upload the essay, enter in the title and number of words and finally digitally sign the declaration.
  6. Once you have done this, your essay will be available to your TOK teacher. S/he will read it one final time so that they can properly declare that it is your work. S/he will then digitally sign it. This will happen on Monday, 12th March 2011. This is the day after your submission deadline.
  7. Only the essays submitted by the Sunday deadline will be accessible to us on the Monday. Do NOT think you can wander into college with your essay on Monday and hand it to us or email it to us. This won't work.
  8. Once signed off, and it is then sent off into some dark and inaccessible corner of the IB interweb. The essay cannot be recalled or changed. If it is not there by 9 a.m. it does not get submitted. DO NOT MISS THE DEADLINE.
  9. Click here for the official IB student guide (PDF file).
